Odd City Drops Gabz's True Romance Prints Tomorrow
A couple of weeks ago, Odd City released two official screen prints for the film True Romance. This was exciting not only because we now had an alternative film print for a classic film, but it also meant that Odd City had the license and there was hope that other prints would be forthcoming. Well, that hope was answered today, when Slashfilm revealed Gabz's two new screen prints for the film. And they are exactly what we had hoped for, from the artist we hoped would tackle them.[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="409"] Detroit Version[/caption]
Gabz has developed a knack for likenesses that really started to develop when he released private commission pieces for Predator and Inception. He then released what is arguably Odd City's most successful release, with his Pacific Rim prints. So if there was anyone up for the task in the Odd City roster, it was Gabz. The artwork here is on point, with many of the most memorable characters and/or scenes represented well. That includes the film's most iconic scene between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken. It also sets all that action within the framework of a cupid, which is a nod not only to the film's title but also the cupid imagery used in the film. It was a clever way to construct the print, and one we weren't expecting. The way the titles and credits are written also work extremely well in terms of the style of the print and the tone of the film. It almost looks like it was written free hand with an ink well pen. The kind of type you'd see in a personalized letter, like one that Alabama may have received from Clarence. It's not perfect or neat, but it has a certain authenticity and genuineness to it, just like the romance in the film.
Here's what Gabz had to say about his work:
"Coming up with a concept for a movie like True Romance, that I have been a huge fan of for years and is among my favorite Tony Scott films of all time, wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be when I first got the proposal. There are so many brilliant quotes, memorable scenes and a mind-blowing soundtrack on top of it all. The Hawaiian shirted Cupid I went with, symbolizing the bizarre romance between Alabama and Clarence, came to me as a revelation and I felt I had a winner. I desperately wanted to not only catch the mood of the film, but also include as many characters as I could possibly fit. I love every single performance from the movie and I felt like everyone deserved a tribute."[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="409"] LA Edition[/caption]
